Simplified Guide to GST Registration for ‘Other Territory’ Applications

If you’re applying for GST registration under the category of ‘Other Territory,’ here’s an easy-to-understand guide to help you navigate the process smoothly. This advisory follows key GST notifications and trade notices issued in 2017.

Who Does This Apply To?

If your business falls under the ‘Other Territory’ category in the GST registration form, your application will be processed by either the Mumbai South Commissionerate (Western Coast) or the Chennai North Commissionerate (Eastern Coast).

Understanding ‘Other Territory’

‘Other Territory’ covers areas like the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones of India. Depending on your location, your application will fall under one of the following jurisdictions:

1. Western Coast – Mumbai South Commissionerate

If you’re near the western coast of India—covering Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Daman and Diu, Karnataka, Kerala, or Lakshadweep—follow these steps:

    • Commissionerate: Mumbai South
    • Division: Division 1
  • Range Allocation by Applicant’s Name:
    • Range I: Names starting with A-D
    • Range II: Names starting with E-H
    • Range III: Names starting with I-M
    • Range IV: Names starting with N-R
    • Range V: Names starting with S-Z

2. Eastern Coast – Chennai North Commissionerate

If you’re near the eastern coast—covering West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, or Andaman & Nicobar Islands—follow these steps:

  • Commissionerate: Chennai North
  • Division: Select from the dropdown corresponding to Chennai North.
  • Range: Choose a range based on your division and the first alphabet of your name.

Steps to Follow

  1. Go to the GST registration portal and start your application.
  2. In Part-A of the GST registration form, select ‘Other Territory’ under the State/UT tab.
  3. Choose the jurisdiction (Mumbai South or Chennai North) based on your business location.
  4. Select the appropriate division and range based on your name and location.

Why Is This Important?

Incorrect selection of jurisdiction can lead to delays in GST registration approval. Following this guide ensures your application is processed accurately and efficiently.
