India Enters Top 10 in Global Patents, Trademarks, and Industrial Designs: WIPO 2024 Report

In a major achievement, India has climbed into the global top 10 rankings for patents, trademarks, and industrial designs, according to the latest World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) 2024 report published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This milestone reflects India’s rapidly growing influence and capabilities in intellectual property (IP), showcasing the country’s expanding role as a global innovation hub.

Record Growth in Patent Applications

India’s patent application growth has been remarkable. In 2023, India saw a record 15.7% increase in patent filings, the highest growth among the top 20 countries, with India achieving this strong performance for the fifth consecutive year. The country ranks sixth worldwide with 64,480 patent applications, and for the first time, over half of these applications (55.2%) were submitted by Indian residents. This signifies the rising interest among Indian individuals and companies in protecting their inventions, backed by government initiatives to make India a hub for innovation.

The report also highlights a 149.4% jump in patents granted by India’s patent office compared to the previous year. This increase not only reflects India’s growing innovation but also the efficiency of its IP system in processing applications. As a result, India is building a strong foundation for an innovative economy by encouraging more inventors to patent their ideas domestically.

Surge in Industrial Design Applications

The WIPO report shows a striking 36.4% rise in India’s industrial design applications. This growth is fueled by sectors such as Textiles and Accessories, Tools and Machines, and Health and Cosmetics, which collectively account for nearly half of all design filings. This increase aligns with India’s emphasis on manufacturing and creative industries, highlighting the country’s expanding focus on product design and development.

Between 2018 and 2023, industrial design applications in India more than doubled, demonstrating the impact of the government’s “Make in India” initiative and other supportive policies to boost industrial and creative sectors. This surge in applications indicates that India’s industries are increasingly focused on protecting their designs to stay competitive in global markets.

Strong Trademark Filings

India ranked fourth worldwide in trademark applications, with a 6.1% increase in 2023. Approximately 90% of these filings were by Indian residents, with sectors like Health (21.9%), Agriculture (15.3%), and Clothing (12.8%) driving the demand for trademark protection. India’s commitment to brand protection is evident, as it now holds the second-largest number of active trademark registrations globally, with over 3.2 million registered trademarks. This reflects the growing value Indian businesses place on safeguarding their brand identities in a competitive market.

IP Growth in India: A Decade of Progress

Over the past decade, India’s patent-to-GDP ratio surged from 144 to 381, showing a direct correlation between IP activity and economic growth. Patent and industrial design applications have more than doubled, while trademark filings have increased by 60%. This growth trajectory highlights India’s dedication to fostering a robust IP ecosystem, which plays a vital role in boosting innovation, supporting economic expansion, and encouraging creativity.

India’s Role in Global IP Growth

The WIPI report notes a global increase in IP filings, with 3.55 million patent applications submitted worldwide in 2023—a 2.7% rise from 2022. Leading economies in Asia, including China, Japan, South Korea, and India, have been instrumental in driving this growth, marking a shift toward local innovation. This trend reflects the resilience of global innovation and the importance of IP protection in today’s economy, even during challenging times.

India’s IP progress is supported by government programs focused on creating a supportive environment for inventors and businesses. The WIPO report showcases India’s journey toward becoming a global leader in innovation, as resident filings indicate the effectiveness of these initiatives in building a strong IP culture within the country.
