Union Finance Minister Launches National MSME Cluster Outreach Programme to Boost Small Businesses
On November 9, 2024, Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman launched the National MSME Cluster Outreach Programme. This initiative is a major step towards supporting the growth and development of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across India. The event, held virtually, was attended by key government officials and senior leaders from major banks, including Shri Jitan Ram Manjhi, the Union Minister for MSMEs, and Shri Pankaj Chaudhary, the Union Minister of State for Finance.
What is the National MSME Cluster Outreach Programme?
The programme is designed to connect approximately 150 MSME clusters across the country with financial services and support systems. By doing so, it aims to promote the growth of MSMEs, which play a crucial role in the Indian economy. These businesses are known for their innovation, job creation, and their contribution to making India self-reliant.
Smt. Sitharaman emphasized how important these enterprises are for the nation’s economic development. “MSMEs drive innovation and create employment,” she said, “and they are at the heart of our efforts to make India a self-reliant nation.”
New SIDBI Branches and Nari Shakti Branches to Empower MSMEs
During the event, the Finance Minister virtually inaugurated six new SIDBI branches in Karnataka, located in Tumakuru, Raichur, Shivamogga, Kalaburagi, Mangaluru, and Vijayapura. These branches aim to expand SIDBI’s reach and provide financial assistance to more MSMEs, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Additionally, four Nari Shakti Branches of Union Bank of India were launched in Bengaluru, Chennai, Jaipur, and Vishakhapatnam. These branches are specifically focused on empowering women entrepreneurs and helping them access the financial resources they need to grow their businesses.
Strengthening Support for MSMEs
In her address, Smt. Sitharaman announced that the government is setting an ambitious target for banks and Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs). These institutions are expected to provide an additional Rs. 1.54 lakh crore in MSME credit for the financial year 2024-25. This is part of a broader goal of reaching Rs. 7 lakh crore in MSME credit by 2026-27.
Smt. Sitharaman also highlighted the importance of banks going the extra mile to support MSMEs, especially small enterprises in rural areas. Shri Jitan Ram Manjhi further emphasized this need, urging banks to focus on extending more credit to businesses in these areas.
Financial Support to MSMEs
During the event, the Finance Minister distributed sanction letters to 11 MSME customers of SIDBI worth Rs. 25.75 crore and to two customers of the Nari Shakti Branch of Union Bank of India, amounting to Rs. 11 crore. These funds will support a wide range of industries, from traditional sectors to advanced industries like aerospace and quantum technology.
Additionally, Canara Bank introduced the Tarun Plus category under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), increasing the loan limit for MSMEs from Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh. This is part of a larger effort to provide better financial support to small and medium businesses across India.
Conclusion
The National MSME Cluster Outreach Programme marks a significant step in the Indian government’s efforts to support small businesses and entrepreneurs. By improving access to financial services and increasing credit, the government is ensuring that MSMEs continue to be a vital part of India’s economy. With initiatives like these, the future looks bright for MSMEs in India, paving the way for more innovation, job creation, and economic growth.
This program is an excellent example of how the government and financial institutions are working together to create a more prosperous and self-reliant nation.
