India’s Trade Performance in August 2024: Growth Drivers and Challenges

India’s trade landscape has been dynamic in the first half of 2024, showcasing both growth and challenges across merchandise and services sectors. As per the data released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) on September 17, 2024, the cumulative overall exports during April-August 2024 were estimated at USD 374.33 billion, reflecting a 5.35% growth compared to USD 350.11 billion during the same period in 2023. This growth is driven by both merchandise and services exports, though some key sectors faced headwinds in August 2024.

Merchandise Exports: August and April-August 2024

The cumulative value of merchandise exports during April-August 2024 was USD 178.68 billion, a modest 1.14% increase from USD 176.67 billion in the corresponding period of 2023. This steady growth underscores the resilience of India’s exports in the face of global economic challenges.

In August 2024, merchandise exports were USD 34.71 billion, reflecting a decline from USD 38.28 billion in August 2023. Despite this dip, key sectors like Engineering Goods, Organic & Inorganic Chemicals, Electronic Goods, Ready-Made Garments (RMG) of all Textiles, and Drugs & Pharmaceuticals demonstrated positive growth, helping cushion the overall decline.

Top Drivers of Merchandise Exports in August 2024:

  • Engineering Goods: Exports grew by 4.36%, from USD 9.05 billion in August 2023 to USD 9.44 billion in August 2024.
  • Organic & Inorganic Chemicals: Exports surged by 8.32%, increasing from USD 2.19 billion in August 2023 to USD 2.37 billion in August 2024.
  • Electronic Goods: Exhibiting robust demand, exports climbed by 7.85%, from USD 2.16 billion in August 2023 to USD 2.33 billion in August 2024.
  • RMG of All Textiles: The sector saw a notable 11.88% growth, with exports rising from USD 1.13 billion to USD 1.27 billion.
  • Drugs & Pharmaceuticals: This crucial sector registered a 4.67% growth, with exports increasing from USD 2.24 billion to USD 2.35 billion.

These sectors were pivotal in maintaining India’s export momentum, particularly as the global economic environment became more challenging.

Non-Petroleum and Non-Gems & Jewellery Trade

Non-petroleum and non-gems & jewellery exports recorded an increase of 2.35% in August 2024, growing from USD 26.14 billion in August 2023 to USD 26.76 billion. This segment reflects the resilience of India’s export basket, excluding the more volatile commodities such as petroleum and gems & jewellery.

The cumulative non-petroleum and non-gems & jewellery exports during April-August 2024 reached USD 135.75 billion, a 5.29% increase compared to USD 128.95 billion during the same period in 2023.

Services Trade: A Strong Growth Area

India’s services sector remained a strong performer, contributing significantly to the country’s overall trade performance. In August 2024, services exports were estimated at USD 30.69 billion, a 6.91% rise from USD 28.71 billion in August 2023. Services imports for the month were estimated at USD 15.70 billion, up from USD 15.09 billion in August 2023.

The cumulative services exports during April-August 2024 were USD 150.18 billion, a 10.84% increase compared to USD 135.50 billion in the same period in 2023. Services imports during this period also grew, reaching USD 80.00 billion from USD 74.28 billion in April-August 2023. The services trade surplus for April-August 2024 stood at USD 70.18 billion, reflecting the sector’s importance in offsetting the merchandise trade deficit.

Merchandise Trade Deficit: A Growing Concern

While India’s exports have shown resilience, the merchandise trade deficit has widened. In August 2024, the merchandise trade deficit stood at USD 29.65 billion, a significant increase from USD 24.02 billion in August 2023. This trend persisted over the April-August 2024 period, with the merchandise trade deficit expanding to USD 116.64 billion compared to USD 99.16 billion during the same period in 2023.

Imports: Key Trends

Total imports (merchandise and services combined) in August 2024 were estimated at USD 80.06 billion, a 3.45% increase compared to USD 77.39 billion in August 2023. Merchandise imports in August 2024 were USD 64.36 billion, up from USD 62.30 billion in August 2023.

The rising imports were largely driven by sectors such as:

  • Petroleum, Crude & Products: Despite a global decline in crude oil prices, India’s petroleum imports remained significant.
  • Non-petroleum imports: In August 2024, non-petroleum imports were USD 53.34 billion, up from USD 46.01 billion in August 2023.

However, certain sectors registered a negative growth in imports, including:

  • Dyeing/Tanning/Colouring Materials (-58.07%)
  • Chemical Material & Products (-53.08%)
  • Pearls, Precious & Semi-Precious Stones (-35.37%)

In Conclusion, India’s trade performance in August 2024 reflects a mixed picture. While key sectors such as Engineering Goods, Electronic Goods, and Services exports have shown commendable growth, the widening trade deficit and decline in merchandise exports pose challenges for policymakers. Balancing the growing import bill, especially in non-petroleum sectors, with sustainable export growth will be crucial for India’s trade outlook in the remaining months of 2024.

India’s strategic focus on non-petroleum and non-gems & jewellery sectors, along with leveraging the services sector, will be vital in maintaining trade momentum amidst global uncertainties. However, continuous efforts to enhance export competitiveness and reduce import dependency will be essential for long-term trade stability.
