Government of India & ADB Sign $170 Million Loan to Enhance Health System Preparedness
The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a $170 million policy-based loan aimed at consolidating and strengthening India’s health system preparedness and response capacity for future pandemics. This initiative is part of the ‘Strengthened and Measurable Actions for Resilient and Transformative Health Systems Programme (Subprogramme 1).’

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
Ms. Juhi Mukherjee highlighted the government’s proactive measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly strengthened the nation’s pandemic preparedness and response capabilities. The ADB programme will support the government’s efforts in several key areas:
- Strengthening Disease Surveillance: The programme aims to enhance disease surveillance systems to detect and respond to health threats more effectively. This includes improving data collection, analysis, and dissemination processes to ensure timely and accurate information for decision-making.
- Ensuring Sufficiency and Quality of Health Professionals: To address the need for a robust healthcare workforce, the programme will focus on ensuring an adequate supply of qualified health professionals. This involves initiatives for training, capacity building, and retention of healthcare workers to meet the demands of future health emergencies.
- Promoting Climate-Resilient Public Health Infrastructure and Service Delivery: Recognizing the impact of climate change on public health, the programme will promote the development of climate-resilient health infrastructure. This includes designing and implementing health facilities and services that can withstand climate-related challenges, ensuring uninterrupted and effective healthcare delivery.
