10 Indian Media Companies To Get Funding Under Google News Initiative

In the present era of globalization, a majority of people in society depend on information to remain connected with the world, and the impact news has on everyone’s daily lives is overwhelming.

The Google News Initiative was launched globally in March 2018 by Google as part of its YouTube funding to support media companies. It is an initiative to helping the media industry to curb fake news. The initiative will analyze and explore different ways to change the spread of fake news in India. It’s focused on three objectives: elevate and strengthen quality journalism, evolve business models to drive sustainable growth, and empower news organizations through technological innovation.

Through the initiative, 87 organizations from 23 countries have been selected and out of that 10 media companies are from India. The organizations are Asianet News Media, Bharatiya digital party (BhaDiPa), FACTLY, Gaon Connection, India Today Group, Live Data Visualisation Pvt Ltd, NDTV, NYOOOZ, ShepHertz, and Video Volunteers.

The initiative will help newsrooms and publishers strengthen their online video capabilities and experiment with new formats for video journalism. Through the initiative, efforts will be built to bring dramatic transformation on how journalism is created, consumed, and paid for.

Google has committed $25Million (INR 175.29 Crore) to support the initiative and around 8,000 journalists were provided with in-depth, hands-on verification training in English and six other languages as the year progressed. Google’s initiative will help reduce the distribution of fake news and battle the spread of misinformation by media agencies to the Indian Public.
